THE SPRINGFIELD TORNADO PROJECT
Stories of Springfield
The Springfield Tornado Project is a collaborative effort between the Springfield Public Schools, The University of Massachusetts' Public History Program and the Greater Springfield YMCA.
After the June 1st 2011 tornado in Springfield, MA a group of high school students were asked to write a "first hand account" of the tornado for their history classes. Teachers wanted to see something more become of all the writing their students produced and approached the UMass Public History department for assistance. Public History students transcribed all the hand written accounts so they could be stored and shared digitally. A website template was made for another group of Springfield teens to work with. The Y-AIM group from the Greater Springfield YMCA helped select, format and design the featured transcriptions and their webpages. The Springfield Tornado Project website is now available to the original students, their collaborators at the YMCA and their community to remember, reflect and educate about the Springfield tornado that affected the city.
